St Bernard’s Hospice has been running the Copper Drive fundraiser in Buffalo City at Schools for the past seven years.
This important initiative has grown annually thanks to dedicated community and staff.
The St Bernard’s Hospice team decided to give the “Copper Drive” a “NEW NAME” and “NEW LOOK” in a “NEW DECADE”! The Interact Group of Stirling Primary School, the school which raised the most money in 2019, voted on their choice of “New Look” for the 2020 campaign.
Fifteen schools participated in 2019 and collected a whopping amount of R44, 126.81 in coins and coppers. Every school that participates are considered Hospice Heroes for helping to make a difference. Hospice is incredibly grateful to the Principals for allowing the Copper Drive to take place and our heartfelt thanks to staff and Interact teachers who help drive this initiative. It took two months for volunteers to count the coins and coppers! This is a mammoth task that would not be possible without our precious Volunteers that dedicate their time to assist us with the counting. It really is the Buffalo City Community that makes this a success.
The following schools participated in 2019, to whom we express our sincere gratitude:
- Advance for Life Christian Academy
- Beaconhurst School
- Centre for Excellence
- Clarendon Girls High School

Below is the “New Look” 5 lt bottles and a short explanation of “why we do it?
St Bernard’s Hospice is challenging +- 50 schools to participate in 2020! Not only is this to raise much needed funding, but to create awareness. Sickness does not only target the old, but the young as well! It is important to get our youth involved in our community from a young age and this is the perfect introduction to Hospices, Palliative Care and what it is about.
Should your child’s school be participating in 2020 please support with a couple of coins and coppers? Please note the banks no longer accept 1 cent and 2 cent pieces.
Thank you to all who supported St Bernard’s Hospice in 2019.
